Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a procedure meant to change and alter the nose. Most rhinoplasties are done to reduce the length of the nose, smooth out bumpy or crooked nose bridges, and reshape drooping or bulbous tips. In the U.S., over 350,000 rhinoplasties are performed yearly, making it one of the most popular cosmetic procedures behind face lifts, tummy tucks, and breast augmentations.

Candidates for Rhinoplasty

You are likely to be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you are healthy, at least 16 years old, and can set aside enough recovery time to achieve the desired results. Surgeons prefer patients to wait until their late teens because their facial features are still maturing. Rhinoplasties in younger teens typically involve cases where nose abnormalities present significant functional issues.

Smoking can delay proper wound healing and increase the risk of wound complications. Studies show that the nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke prevent oxygen from reaching cells and trigger the release of certain hormones that interfere with wound healing.  Complete cessation of nicotine and tobacco is recommended before and after surgery.

The best candidate for rhinoplasty also has realistic expectations about their nose’s appearance and is motivated to follow their surgeon’s instructions for a normal recovery. Potential rhinoplasty patients should also realize that this procedure can aim to improve imperfections but is not intended to “sculpt” a perfect nose.

Individuals with heart disease, poorly managed diabetes, or respiratory conditions such as COPD or severe asthma may not be good candidates for rhinoplasty.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

To determine if a patient is a good candidate for rhinoplasty, surgeons will ask questions like:

  • What differences do you expect to see between your nose and your post operative nose once it has healed?
  • Have you ever had a rhinoplasty procedure in the past?
  • Do you smoke?
  • Have you ever had a severe reaction to certain medications?
  • Are you presently taking OTC or prescription medication?

Consultations typically end with your surgeon determining your candidacy for the rhinoplasty procedure.
